Module 3: Economics and Development

The E&D program consists of four sub-modules:
1. Introduction to Economics and Development
This module provides an overview of the characteristics of economics and development theories, poverty, international trade, and globalization. Skills and information are presented in the context of research in group dynamics and West African situations. While readings provide data and findings, module activities emphasize group discussion and active participation.

2. Community Economic Development & Micro-Enterprise
This module covers many different themes around community principles and economic enterprise. Some of the course content focuses on creating a community vision around entrepreneurial development. We will also take a close look at entrepreneur characteristics and techniques, gender focused micro-enterprise, and group or individual enterprise. Once again, research is presented and activities challenge participants to apply the principles to their work situations and the West African social context. Activities are interactive and encourage reflection and group discussion.

3. Community Assessment and Mobilization
This module focuses on unique communities and helps outline approach techniques for positive development plans. Several different theories are introduced and used as teaching tools. A community action plan is used as a hands on tool to identify asset based community development. Community mobilization and its barriers are also discussed in this module. All of these areas are explored by the group through participatory activities and discussions.

4. Social Issues and Development
This module starts with an in-depth look at defining poverty. Through various exercises, the participants will be made aware of the causes of poverty eradication, alleviation, and reduction. We will study population and the effects it has on poverty through formal debate techniques. An in-depth examination of how issues such as the environment, health, and gender are linked to development. Advocacy and development are introduced as well as their elements and limitations which are illustrated by various case studies.
