What is WARD?
The West African Rural Development Centre is designed to become a "Centre of Excellence" for the training of community development practioners as well as for the development of appropriate and relevant community development training materials for West African countries. WARD was originally a 5-year project funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), but is now fully sustainable and can function on its own revenues. The Center is currently located on the campus of the Gambia Technical Training Institute (GTTI) in Kanifing, just outside of Banjul, capital city of The Gambia.

In collaboration with the Rural Development Institute (RDI), the WARD project is building the capacity of GTTI and the University of the Gambia (UoTG) to provide training skills required by rural development workers in West Africa. The program is designed to meet the needs of those wishing to prepare for a career in rural development and for professionals currently working in developing capacities. This program provides practical, hands-on skills for those working (or wishing to work) in rural areas of West AFrica.

The Centre staff also provide research services, curriculum development workshops, and other seminars within the region, and has delivered RCDP courses outside the Gambia. One module was delivered in Ghana through their University for Development Studies.

The aim of these programs is ultimately poverty alleviation in all senses of the term by "increasing, in a sustainable manner, the capacity of developing countries to educate and train human resources required to meet their priority needs."
